Krk, also known as the "Golden Island," is Croatia's second-largest and most populous island. It is tied to Cres and has been connected to the mainland since 1980 by the Krk Bridge. Most people don't know Rijeka Airport (RJK) sits on the island itself, in Omišalj. You can therefore drive, or fly, onto an island without ever consulting a ferry timetable.

What Makes the Island of Krk Special?
Drive on to your holiday villa. The Krk Bridge carries the road onto the island. From the day it was built to today, it has symbolized Kvarner. For families packing a car in Munich, Vienna, Milan or Zagreb, this removes the ferry planning that rules out other islands.
The airport is on the island. Rijeka Airport (RJK) sits at Omišalj on Krk's northern tip, with seasonal scheduled service from a growing list of European cities. Transfers from the terminal to most villas on the island take 15-35 minutes.
It is the historic heart of Croatian literacy. The Baška tablet, carved around 1100 and found at the Church of St Lucy, is the most important early monument of Croatian Glagolitic writing. The island wears that heritage everywhere, from stone inscriptions to street names.
It has Croatia's most singular wine village. Vrbnik sits on a cliff above the sea and grows the indigenous white Žlahtina in the fields below. It also claims the world's narrowest street, Klančić, at 40-50 cm wide. Tastings in the village cellars, with the vineyard visible through the window, are the island's signature afternoon.
The beaches carry Blue Flags. Baška's Big Beach (Vela plaža) is a 1.8 km pebble crescent. It has been Blue Flag certified since 1999, with marked hiking trails through the bare hills that close the island's southern end. Quieter coves run from Stara Baška around to Šilo. And the Biserujka cave near Rudine adds a half-day underground for children.

Krk Town For a Private Pool Holiday
Krk town has been the island's center since Roman Curicum. Its walled old town centers on the Cathedral of the Assumption and Frankopan Castle, with a working marina and the island's widest selection of restaurants. A bonus is a long waterfront that stays alive from Easter to November. Villas here and in the surrounding villages put it all within walking distance or a short drive away.

Krk town offers the island's best combination of history, dining, and services. Book early for July and August as the capital's stock moves first.
Malinska and Njivice
The west coast gets the island's gentlest weather. Its two resort villages grew up around sheltered coves and pine shade. Malinska, once a Habsburg-era holiday resort, has a long café riva and gentle beaches, and Njivice repeats the formula on a smaller scale. These are ideal for family holidays, especially if you are traveling with small children. They offer short distances, shallow water, and supermarkets and pharmacies within walking distance.

This part of the island has the most complete family infrastructure and the longest season.
Punat and Stara Baška
Punat wraps around one of the Adriatic's most sheltered bays. It is home to one of Croatia's oldest and largest marinas. The wooded islet of Košljun and its Franciscan monastery are a five-minute taxi-boat ride away. This is the perfect spot for sailors and paddleboarders to base here. Continue south, and the road ends at Stara Baška. You'll find a chain of white-pebble coves that rank among Kvarner's best for swimming. Arrive by kayak or on foot for the quietest.

Vrbnik and the East
Vrbnik is the island's village stacked on a cliff. It is popular for the Žlahtina vineyards that spread across the fertile fields behind it. Squeeze through Klančić, the 40-50 cm passage claimed as the world's narrowest street, taste at the family wineries, and stay for grilled scampi above the water.

Baška: The Beach
At the island's southern end is Baška, home to the beach that built Kvarner tourism: Vela plaža (the Big Beach). A promenade lined with cafés and watersport stations runs along it. The same amphitheater of hills carries over 80 km of marked trails. The most popular walk is to the Church of St Lucy at Jurandvor, where the Baška tablet was found.

This is the classic beach-holiday setup with hiking out the back door. The drive from the bridge is the island's longest at about 45 minutes.
Dobrinj, Šilo and the Northeast
Inland Dobrinj is a hilltop village of stone lanes and long views. On its coast, Šilo faces Crikvenica across the channel with a low-key beach scene and fishing-village pace. And the Biserujka cave near Rudine makes the area's rainy-day card.

Klancic - the world's narrowest street
Villas in Kvarner Bay: Krk as the Regional Base
Demand for villas across Kvarner Bay usually lands on Krk. The island sits in the middle of the bay with fixed links both ways, so it works as a hub like no other Kvarner base.
- West: the Opatija Riviera, the Habsburg belle-époque resort strip, is 45 minutes by road for a promenade-and-cake afternoon.
- Onward by ferry: the Valbiska port on Krk's west coast connects to Merag on Cres in about 25 minutes, opening Cres and Lošinj for day trips or two-island itineraries. A seasonal line runs toward Rab from the same port.
- South: Rab's sandy Lopar peninsula and its medieval town make the best full-day boat excursion from Baška or Punat.
- Inland: Risnjak National Park's forests and the Učka massif above Opatija give Kvarner a mountain dimension Dalmatia lacks. Both are day-trippable.

When to Visit Krk
Kvarner runs a touch cooler than Dalmatia in both air and sea, which reads as a negative in May and a blessing in August. In June, the sea reaches swimming-warm temperatures, and villa prices are 20-30% below peak. July and August are peak season, with outdoor temperatures between 25-31°C and sea temperatures 22-25°C. These are the fullest months. In September, you can still swim in the warm sea, join the grape harvest in the Vrbnik field, and enjoy empty trails again.
RLVC Tips
Book the villa for arrival logic, not just looks. With no ferry to catch, Krk rewards late flights and Friday-evening drives. We recommend it for first-time villa renters traveling with infants. If you forget something, a full supermarket is never more than 20 minutes away.
Do Vrbnik at 17:00. Tour buses do the village at midday. Come for the last two hours of light, taste at a family cellar while the field below turns gold, and stay for scampi.
Since you saved the ferry on arrival, spend one on a day trip: Valbiska to Merag gets you to Cres in 25 minutes, with time for lunch in Cres town and the griffon vulture cliffs of Beli.
Order šurlice. The island's pasta is a konoba dish, best inland around Dobrinj and Vrbnik, where they still hand-roll it daily. Goulash at lunch, scampi on the coast at dinner.
Changeover-day traffic in August peaks Saturday late morning at the bridge, and beaches peak 11:00-17:00. If you flip the day, do sights and swims early, pool through the afternoon, and town after 18:00, you'll barely notice peak season.
September is the wine month. Harvest in the Vrbnik field and swim in the sea still at 21-23°C after harvest. Hiking in the country behind Baška is finally cool enough to enjoy at noon.
